LeBron James Joins Philadelphia 76ers for Record 24th NBA Season

LeBron James will continue his NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers, bringing an end to his eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. The 41-year-old announced the move on Friday after weeks of speculation about his future. The 2026-27 campaign will be his 24th NBA season, extending his league record.

Cleveland and Miami were among the destinations linked with James after his departure from Los Angeles. Philadelphia, however, offered him the chance to join a team that already has Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey and remains focused on competing for the championship.

The 76ers had not released the complete financial terms of the agreement at the time of publication. Media reports described it as a two-year deal worth approximately $8 million, with a player option for the second season.

James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games last season. He is no longer expected to carry the same workload he handled earlier in his career, but he remains capable of organising an offence and controlling important possessions.

His arrival gives Philadelphia another experienced playmaker alongside Embiid and Maxey.

The Sixers will have to find a balance between the three players. Embiid remains the team’s main interior scorer, while Maxey’s speed is essential when Philadelphia wants to attack before the opposing defence is set.

James can take over more of the organisation when Embiid is resting. He can also play closer to the basket or create opportunities for Maxey after drawing a second defender.

Health will remain one of the main concerns.

Embiid has missed significant time in recent seasons, and Philadelphia is unlikely to ask James to play every game or carry heavy minutes during difficult stretches of the regular season.

That will increase the responsibility placed on Maxey and the bench. The Sixers will need to win enough games when James or Embiid is unavailable to avoid overworking both veterans before the playoffs.

The rest of the roster will also matter. Philadelphia still needs players who can make open shots, defend quicker opponents and maintain the pace when the leading players are resting.

The 76ers have not won an NBA championship since 1983. In recent years, the team has repeatedly entered the season with high expectations but has not reached the Eastern Conference finals during the Embiid era.

James arrives with experience that Philadelphia previously lacked. He has played in 10 NBA Finals and won championships with Miami, Cleveland and Los Angeles.

His signing will therefore raise expectations immediately. A strong regular season or another early playoff victory will not be enough for a team built around James, Embiid and Maxey.

For the Lakers, the move closes an important period in the franchise’s recent history.

James joined Los Angeles in 2018 and helped the team win the 2020 championship. He remained one of its principal scorers and playmakers through several changes to the roster.

Los Angeles can now begin the next stage of its rebuilding process. Philadelphia is making the opposite choice, adding one of the most experienced players in NBA history for another immediate attempt at the title.

The first answers will come when the season begins: how often James and Embiid can play together, whether Maxey maintains his attacking role and whether Philadelphia has enough depth to remain competitive through a long playoff run.
