When wildfires make thunderstorms: NASA studies clouds to improve fire warnings

Clouds above North American wildfires are the focus of a NASA airborne research campaign. In an update published on 2 October, NASA described INSPYRE’s move from summer observations to analysis combining aircraft, satellite and ground measurements. The target is the pyrocumulonimbus cloud: intense fire can drive a thunderstorm with lightning and powerful winds.

For firefighters, the issue extends beyond where smoke travels. Winds generated by the cloud can change fire conditions below. Anticipating that change could give managers more time to adjust operations or withdraw crews. The research seeks evidence for such warnings; it is not an announcement of an operational forecasting system.

The campaign measures events from different positions, then compares the observations with satellites and models. A picture of a smoke column alone cannot separate the roles of fire intensity, atmospheric conditions and processes inside a cloud. Complementary measurements allow scientists to test those links.

The consequences can extend far beyond the fire. The project asks which fires generate these clouds, what determines whether smoke reaches the stratosphere, and how the resulting plumes affect upper-atmosphere composition and radiation. Answering those questions is necessary before the processes can be represented more reliably in models.

The October update describes progress in observation and analysis, without quantifying an improvement in firefighting forecasts. Fire can alter the weather around it. The task now is to establish when that happens and how early the warning signs can be recognised.
