Dakar prepares for a first Youth Olympic appearance by a Refugee Olympic Team

The Dakar Youth Olympic Games are scheduled for 31 October to 13 November in Senegal. Alongside Africa’s first Olympic sporting event, preparations include another debut: a Refugee Olympic Team at the Youth Games.

IOC material published on 14 September records preparation at a training centre in Kaptagat, Kenya, with help from marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge. It documents a training phase, rather than competition already taking place in October.

The Youth Games concern the development of young athletes. Refugee participation extends access beyond the usual organisation of national teams, providing a route to an international competition for athletes affected by displacement.

Competitive performance must be assessed once events begin. For the host, attention surrounding a first African edition will also have to be matched by the practical delivery of the Games.

With several weeks before the opening, the confirmed dates and preparations provide the basis for coverage. Actual performances, results and athletes’ experiences will give the historical milestone its sporting detail.
