European Institute of Cinema and Media: Three-Year Online Film Directing Programme at Undergraduate Level

Learning film directing means moving from a story to images and from an individual idea to an actual production. The European Institute of Cinema and Media (ISECM) offers a three-year Film Directing programme with an online study option for applicants seeking sustained training without relocating abroad for an extended period.

A member of GCHE, the institute offers programmes across directing, screenwriting, screen acting, production management, distribution and media. Its three-year directing pathway connects film expression with practice through foundations, creative work, professional workflow and a final project.

What does the three-year programme cover?

A director’s work begins before the shoot. Understanding characters, organising information visually and bringing performance, sound and editing together are all part of learning to tell a story on screen.

The programme centres on directing, audiovisual language and narrative skills. Its four-part framework provides a route from foundational learning into creative exercises and production processes, culminating in a final project. Applicants can request details of assignments, assessment and progression from the admissions office.

Preparing for online study

The school uses Moodle for online learning. Accessing the platform does not itself require a high-performance computer; editing and virtual production exercises have different software and hardware needs. Students are not required to purchase an expensive professional camera at the outset. A phone or camera capable of recording 1080p video can serve as a starting tool, with sound equipment, a tripod, headphones and backup storage added according to the exercises.

For a new study computer, the school recommends considering at least 32GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and external storage. Windows users should also consider dedicated graphics performance; Apple users can consider an appropriately configured Apple Silicon model. Buying a Mac is not compulsory.

Directing fundamentals and new production tools

From the 2026 intake, the institute plans to introduce virtual production software and practical exercises progressively alongside directing and visual storytelling. Editing teaching will introduce Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro, while related virtual production content will progressively include Unreal Engine and Blender. Modules, exercises and implementation follow the teaching plan for each intake.

Duration, tuition and applications

The programme lasts three years. Published online tuition is €9,800 per year, or €29,400 over three years. Instalment payments are available to reduce the pressure of paying tuition in one lump sum. Applicants should ask admissions about schedules, eligibility and what fees cover; the enrolment contract sets the applicable terms.

When enquiring, use “Three-Year Online Film Directing Programme” as the subject and include your educational background, any filmmaking experience and intended start date. Confirm teaching language, timetable, practical requirements and any compulsory attendance before enrolling.
