ECB examines a link to Brazil’s Pix, with instant cross-border payments still under review
The European Central Bank announced on 24 September that its Governing Council had approved a feasibility assessment of a link between TIPS and Brazil’s Pix. It advances work on payment infrastructure without opening a new service to customers.
The ECB and the Central Bank of Brazil will examine technical, operational, legal and business conditions. Instant settlement within two domestic systems does not automatically resolve currency conversion, compliance or responsibilities across a border.
The ECB says a connection could make payments between the euro area and Brazil faster and cheaper. These remain potential benefits. The announcement provides neither a launch date nor a guaranteed price for an individual transfer.
Pix is owned and operated by Brazil’s central bank. TIPS provides instant payment settlement in central bank money. Linking the systems would address friction between payment networks, rather than simply add a feature to a banking app.
The next substantive step would be a decision to implement a connection, with its participants and transaction conditions defined. Until then, a feasibility study should not be confused with an available cross-border payment product.
