France’s autumn break begins with a change in the weather
Some southwestern areas could reach 30°C on Thursday. By the first holiday weekend, many regions are forecast to stay at or below 15°C.
The school holidays are arriving just as France’s warm spell runs out. Cooler air is forecast to move in from Friday, followed by northerly to northeasterly winds over the weekend, according to Météo-France’s bulletin of 14 October.
Thursday marks the peak of the warmth, with temperatures locally reaching 30°C in Béarn, in the southwest. Many regions will see weekend highs no greater than 15°C. Sunshine before departure may therefore give families a misleading impression of the conditions ahead.
The west turns first
An Atlantic disturbance reaches western France on Friday 16 October, bringing rain and some thunderstorms. Winds turn northwesterly and temperatures fall. Eastern France holds on to fine, warm conditions that day.
Over the weekend, rain is forecast particularly from the Pyrenees towards the eastern borders and near the Channel coast. The cooling is more widespread than the rainfall: a colder weekend does not mean uninterrupted rain at every destination.
A shared holiday calendar
School zones A, B and C in mainland France, as well as Corsica, start their autumn break after classes on Saturday 17 October. Pupils with no Saturday lessons finish on Friday afternoon. Classes resume on Monday 2 November.
For families heading west on Friday or planning time outdoors over the weekend, the change falls at the start of their break. Local forecasts will matter more than Thursday’s warmth. This short-range outlook does not establish the weather for the full fortnight.
