Kenya’s eye-care records turn from counting visits to following patients

After an eye screening, does a patient complete a referral, receive treatment and return for review? Kenya is preparing case-based reporting designed to follow those steps in 11 counties of its western Lake Basin region, WHO reported on 30 September.

Aggregate reports count services over a period. Individual records can connect registration, clinical assessment, surgery or other treatment, follow-up and outcomes. They make it possible to see where care is interrupted.

A technical workshop in Kisumu on 5–7 August brought together health authorities, clinicians and information specialists to discuss indicators and data flows. This was preparatory work, not evidence of a completed regional rollout.

The planned sequence includes readiness assessment, local indicators and procedures, system configuration and staff training. Pilots in selected hospitals are to precede expansion across the region. Comparable reporting across different types of providers is also part of the effort.

The practical value lies in linking activity to continuity of care. Records can reveal missed follow-up or waiting times; improvement depends on using that information to organise referrals and subsequent treatment.
