NASA seeks flight directors with experience making decisions under pressure

NASA opened applications for a new class of flight directors on 2 October, with a deadline of 12 October. Those selected will work in mission control at Johnson Space Center in Houston, coordinating flight controllers, astronauts and commercial and international partners during real-time operations and risk management.

This is a role for experienced professionals. Candidates must be US citizens with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics. NASA also requires substantial, progressively responsible professional experience, including time-critical decisions in high-stress, high-risk environments.

The degree requirements establish a technical foundation. The experience requirement addresses a different task: reaching decisions as information changes and integrating the work of several specialist teams. Before a mission, directors also collaborate with engineering, safety and programme staff to align operational plans with spacecraft capabilities and mission objectives.

Previous work as a flight controller is not a prerequisite. Although many directors have followed that route, NASA says applicants need not have done so. For people considering a space-sector career, the distinction draws attention to both professional training and the responsibilities accumulated afterwards.

NASA plans to announce selections by the end of the year. New directors will receive extensive training in flight control, spacecraft systems, operational leadership and risk management. The announcement defines an entry route; selection and training still determine who is ready to take responsibility in mission control.
