Braking distance and tire grip: An in-depth analysis of the fatal blind spots for cyclists in urban road conditions
On the complex mixed traffic roads in European cities, many serious cycling accidents stem from car owners’ blind confidence in the “braking limits” of their vehicles. Especially when encountering the unique uneven cobblestone roads (Cobblestone) in ancient European neighborhoods or the slippery leaf roads after rain, the braking distance is often extended beyond imagination. The EIP Safety Lecture Hall used high-frequency precision trackers to capture real braking curves under different braking hardware. Data shows that traditional V brakes or low-end cable mechanical disc brakes take significantly too long to reach a complete stop from the initial braking speed on wet stone roads due to large force transmission losses. For high-end models equipped with 180mm large-diameter hydraulic mineral oil disc brakes and all-weather high-silica formula micro-grooved anti-skid tires (such as German Continental or Michelin commuter tires), the braking distance is not only shortened by nearly half than the former, but its linear transmission of oil pressure also provides an excellent anti-locking feel. We solemnly warn all European consumers: the life-saving ROI (return on investment) of upgrading to a set of high-quality all-season commuter tires and high-quality brake pads far exceeds that of upgrading any carbon fiber appearance kit.
