Paul Seixas Emerges as France’s Breakout Star at the 2026 Tour de France

At every finish, the same phones rise above the crowd and the same name is shouted from behind the barriers. Paul Seixas is only halfway through his first Tour de France, yet the 19-year-old French rider is already receiving the kind of attention usually reserved for proven champions.

After finishing third at Le Lioran, Paul Seixas moved into fifth place overall. He remains more than four minutes behind race leader Tadej Pogačar, but is still close enough to the other podium contenders to keep the French public watching every climb.

Paul Seixas is refusing to make promises

Seixas has avoided declaring that he is riding for the podium. He talks instead about recovery, learning and surviving one stage at a time. His team is equally cautious, knowing that the Alps and the accumulated fatigue of a three-week race can transform the standings very quickly.

The caution has done little to slow the excitement around him. The youngest Tour de France starter since 1937, Seixas has become the leading French story of this year’s race. His climbing performances have impressed, but so has the calm with which he has handled heat, dangerous descents and the expectations surrounding him.

The road from Dole to Belfort brings a different test

Stage 13 covers 205.8 kilometres between Dole and Belfort, making it the longest stage of the 2026 Tour de France. The route includes the Ballon d’Alsace and may suit a breakaway, although the main contenders will still need to watch for late attacks.

Seixas may not produce a dramatic result on Friday. In a Grand Tour, however, avoiding trouble and conserving energy can matter as much as winning time. The more difficult question is whether he can maintain the same level once the race reaches the decisive Alpine stages.
