Severe Storms in France Kill Two and Leave 53,000 Homes Without Power

Much of France was still dealing with intense summer heat when the sky changed suddenly on Thursday evening. Within a few hours, violent thunderstorms crossed several regions, bringing heavy rain, hail and powerful wind gusts.

At least two people died during the storms. By Friday morning, around 53,000 households were still without electricity. Nearly 25,000 customers were affected in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, while approximately 20,000 homes had lost power in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Residents woke to fallen trees and damaged roads

In several towns, people found branches and entire trees lying across roads. Power lines were damaged, gardens were covered in leaves and some vehicles had been struck by hail.

Repair crews began working during the night. Restoring electricity is only part of the operation. Roads must first be cleared, fallen cables secured and damaged poles inspected before lines can safely be switched back on.

The damage was highly localised. One town could experience violent winds while another only a few kilometres away received little more than heavy rain. This explains why some areas returned to normal quickly while others were still waiting for repairs.

Calmer weather, but disruption remains

Conditions had improved across much of France by Friday morning. Clearer skies, however, do not immediately remove the damage left behind by a severe storm.

Where trees have fallen across cables, restoring power may take several hours. Residents have been warned not to touch fallen electrical lines and to report damaged equipment.
